This sermon shows three ways to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Paul by the Philippian Church was worthy of all praise. The Reformed stress on the sovereignty of God the action of God and the initiation by God in salvation might lead someone to conclude that we are utterly pass.
So then my beloved even as you have always obeyed not only in my presence but now much more in my absence work out your own. When Paul says that we are to work out our salvation he doesnt mean that we work for our salvation. It simply means to have great fear which can be either positive awe or negative fright dread.
Paul would urge us to do the same. God works in us and we also work. Similarly fear and trembling isnt likely about being afraid and also shaking.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. From the beginning the treatment of St. Paul was urging the church to obey his teaching.
